The world’s best young skiers will be converging on Whistler Mountain in April to test their speed and skills at what is likely their first international ski racing competition. The 18th annual Whistler Cup, presented by Rio Tinto Alcan, will be held April 9-11, 2010, drawing nearly 400 athletes from 20 countries. This one of a kind event will see the world’s top juvenile skiers test their skills in Super G, giant slalom, slalom and kombi.
As Canada prepared its athletes for the 2010 Olympics, the nation raised its standard with the goal of being the top ski nation in the world. The Whistler Cup played a central role in reaching this goal, as the event is an important stepping stone for young skiers aspiring to join provincial and national ski teams.
The Whistler Cup hosts young skiers, ages 11-14 as they compete in one of their first international ski racing events and where future ski racing champions begin their international careers. For instance, Whistler Mountain Ski Club alumnus and Canadian Alpine Ski Team members Manuel Osborne-Paradis, Britt and Michael Janyk, and Robbie Dixon are all medal contenders at the 2010 Olympics. Erik Guay, Jan Hudec and Emily Brydon also had their first international exposure here at the Whistler Cup. The Whistler Cup provides young skiers with the opportunity to test their skills and prepare them for the kind of future these athletes represent.
The three - day Whistler Cup, organized by the Whistler Mountain Ski Club, has become world renowned as just one of eight international world class juvenile events for the K1 and K2 levels, and the only one held on North American slopes. Many of the world’s top skiers started their international racing careers at the Whistler Cup including Benjamin Raich, Lindsay Vonn, Tina Maze, Anja Paerson, Denise Karbon, Julia Mancuso, Nicole Gius, Nicole Hosp, Silvan Zurbriggen and Andrew Weibrecht.
The Whistler Cup motivates, challenges and inspires these young racers to make their Olympic dreams a reality. Many of these skiers will be representing their countries on the World Cup and Olympic teams in the next five to ten years.
The Whistler Cup is organized by the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and sanctioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS). We are fortunate to have dedicated partners like Rio Tinto Alcan, Manulife Financial, Whistler Blackcomb, Sport Canada, Goldwin and Shaw Cablesystems GP.
