THE WHISTLER CUP is an international ski event organized by the Whistler Ski Club and hosted by Whistler Blackcomb. Having completed its  17th year, Whistler Cup has grown to become the largest and most important ski race in North America, and internationally, for athletes aged 11 – 14 years. It is held under the auspice of FIS, the international governing body for alpine skiing. With over 390 young athletes from 20 countries, Whistler Cup brings together children from many different cultures, from around the world.  Following the success of Whistler as a host of the 2010 Winter Olympics, The Whistler Cup is the must-attend race for athletes and sponsors not only in the US and Canada, but around the world. For many of our young Canadian athletes, this is the first opportunity they have to meet and ski with the world’s best.

The 18th edition of the Whistler Cup will be held on April 9, 10, and 11, 2010.  Come and join us!

THOMPSON AND REMME LEAD CANADIANS ON DAY TWO AT WHISTLER CUP
Saturday, April 11, 2009

WHISTLER, BC (April 11, 2009) – Broderick Thompson (Whistler, BC) made it back to the podium after yesterday’s big super-G win, finishing third in the men’s K2 slalom today at the Whistler Cup.

Thompson was third on a foggy day in Whistler behind winner Max Luukko of Finland. Luukko’s finished in a two-run combined time of 1:37.04 with American Daniel Duffy in second.

“It was a little foggy up there today for sure but it’s slalom so there’s no problem seeing your next gate,” said Thompson about the conditions.

REMME RETURNS TO K1 PODIUM

Roni Remme (Palgrave, ON), who was on the podium at last year’s Whistler Cup as a first year K1, returned to the podium in today’s ladies K1 giant slalom race. The Alpine Ski Club racer finished third in a two-run combined time of 1:40.37.

“It was okay. The course was set well but the conditions today, with the fog, added a little extra to the challenge,” said Remme. “The Whistler Cup is always really interesting with the Europeans and all the other countries that participate and today was a great race.”

Japan’s Asa Ando finished in a two-run time of 1:39.68 to beat out yesterday’s slalom winner Nea Luuko of Finland, who placed second in 1:40.26.

SHIFFRIN CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin returned to her winning ways, finishing in top spot in the ladies K2 slalom. Shiffrin, who swept all three events as a K1 at the Whistler Cup last season, won today in a two-run combined time of 1:36.59.

Bara Strakova of the Czech Republic was second, just 0.04s behind with American Paula Moltzan third. The top Canadian was Kelly Moore (Ottawa, ON) who finished fourth in a two-run combined time of 1:37.86.

“This is a good finish. I am really happy considering how far back that I started. To move up all the way to fourth, with the tough visibility and the course starting to get rough, it’s pretty good,” said the Mont Tremblant skier who began with the 36th bib position.

CAYMAN ISLANDS SKIER THIRD IN MEN’S K1 GS

The men’s K1 giant slalom was won by Japan’s Keiya Saito in 1:41.57 with teammate Shun Okumura following in 1:42.93.

Perhaps the most unique result of the day came from Dean Travers, who finished third representing the Cayman Islands.

“I spend a lot of time in the summer in the Cayman Islands,” said Travers, a 12-year-old Aspen Valley Ski Club racer who spends the winter in Colorado.

“I let myself down in the second run to be honest,” Travers said about his performance, which he followed the second fastest opening run with the eighth best second run. “But overall I have to be happy because this is my first time ever in an international competition.”

Jack Leitch (Calgary, AB) of the Calgary Alpine Racing Club was the top Canadian finishing sixth in 1:44.42.

Whistler Cup, now in its 17th year, brings over 390 young athletes from 20 countries to Canada for one of only eight annual world-class international events in the world for skiers this age. Races are split into K1 (11 and 12-year-old’s) and K2 (13 and 14-year-old’s).

The 2009 Whistler Cup wraps up tomorrow with a K1 Kombi while the K2’s finish with a giant slalom.
