HEADLINE SPONSOR RIO TINTO ALCAN CONFIRMED FOR 2010 WHISTLER CUP

Wayne Holm, Chair of the 18th Whistler Cup, confirmed today that longstanding supporters RIO TINTO ALCAN are stepping up to the plate as title sponsor of this year's event.

“I was delighted to hear from Richard Prokopanko, Director of Government Relations at Rio Tinto, and a keen personal supporter of ski racing, that Rio Tinto will be our title sponsor this year. In this banner 2010 year when the eyes of the world will be on Whistler, it is exciting to have continuing support from a company that has been involved with kinder ski racing since 1996.”

The 2010 Whistler Cup race, for juvenile racers age 11-14, and the biggest FIS sanctioned race in the world for this age group, will run April 9th to 11th at Whistler.

Some 400 young racers, from upwards of 20 countries, will test their mettle on the same runs where Olympians will race for the podium in February.

Team Canada will be keen to repeat their victory of 2009, when the trophy remained in the home country.

Rio Tinto take on the title sponsorship role for the first time, following previous sponsorship at the 'Gold' and then 'Platinum' level.

“It feels great to be in top spot as title supporter and friend of the Whistler Cup” said Richard Prokopanko, “Rio Tinto are pleased to be partners in an event which never fails to excite and inspire.”

Concludes Wayne Holm, “we are encouraged that this far-sighted move by such a respected company as Rio Tinto, can only lead to increasing sponsorship and support….today, the future of juvenile, international ski racing in Canada, looks very bright indeed.”
