Whistler Cup announces strong international field at renowned youth ski race

December 22, 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

After a 3-year hiatus, Whistler Cup organizers are pleased to announce XX countries are already confirmed, led by the return of Norway, the USA, and Switzerland to headline the U16 race at the 30th iteration of the O2e Brands Whistler Cup. In addition, Finland has accepted an invitation and will be making the journey to Whistler in April, making this one of the strongest fields in recent memory.

This U16 contingent will be as large as ever, with over 20 international teams competing for the coveted Cup.

“2023 will be a special year for the Whistler Cup as it is our first year back since Covid and is our 30th anniversary. The commitment from our sponsors, the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and the hundreds of volunteers it takes to run this event is a true testament to why we are celebrating our 30th anniversary, said event Chair, Jim McGovern. Succession is never easy, but its even more challenging after a three-year hiatus. I want to personally thank all the volunteers who have held key roles that are coming back to ensure a transfer of knowledge to new leaders and the success of our event.”

While the elite skiers battle for the coveted Whistler Cup, U14 clubs from across the country will also make the trip to Whistler in April for a taste of international competition of their own at the U14 Whistler Cup Festival. Registration will open in January.

The Whistler Cup was created by Max Meier, the parent of a young Whistler ski racer. He and the Whistler Mountain Ski Club Program Director at the time, Joze Sparovec, were inspired to bring an international juvenile ski race to Canada. With the help of the third founder, Jim Yeates, the inaugural Whistler Cup was held in 1993 and has grown in stature and influence. This year’s race celebrates 30 years of successful international ski racing at Whistler Blackcomb.

The Whistler Cup has a long track record of showcasing future stars. Former participants include the USA’s Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin, Slovenia’s Tina Maze, and Austrian champions Anna Veith (Fenninger) and Marcel Hirscher. Many of Canada’s biggest World Cup and Olympic alpine and ski-cross stars have also graced the event over the years, experiencing international competition for the first time on their journey toward success on the world stage.
